Zero Tolerance Policy

Cheaters Will Not Be Tolerated at Wawa Fish Derby

The Wawa Ice Fishing Derby participants will not be allowed to enter any fish in the Derby that has puncture marks in any location other than the mouth of the fish.

It has been the experience of the Derby Committee in prior years that fish were caught on a Derby lake prior to the Derby which had fishing line threaded through the body of the fish in order to tether it. This has happened on several occasions and is unacceptable behaviour for any fisherman.

The Wawa Ice Fishing Derby Board works closely with local MNR and OPP officials to patrol the lakes and ensure anglers a re not tethering fish under their huts. Anyone with information regarding natural resources violations can call 1-877-TIPS-MNR (847-7667) toll- free any time or can also call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Check – in and Weigh – In Officials will be inspecting each fish thoroughly to ensure that it has been lawfully caught and entered according to our Rules and Regulations. Derby officials have the final decision regarding entry of fish.

Please Respect our Natural Resource

Derby officials, all committee members and volunteers are very respectful of the resources that we enjoy in our own backyard. It is our job to ensure they are used sustainably and are preserved for future generations to enjoy as we do. Please join with us in giving our natural environment and Derby officials all of your respect as you enjoy a weekend in our great outdoors.

  • Make sure you take off the lake everything you bring with you on the lake. Please do not leave any litter or garbage behind. Volunteers must work to clean up the mess that you leave.

  • Only take the fish you are tagging to enter into the Derby. Please do not take any other fish home with you and respect the number of fish taken from the lake throughout the weekend for the Derby as enough (see Derby rules 3 & 15)

  • Co-operate with Derby Officials if you are fishing inside of a fishing hut and open your hut to them when they request.
